Self Catering in South Yorkshire

Welcome to Moor Royd House, Self Catering in South Yorkshire. Moor Royd is a hamlet of five dwellings off the Barnsley to Manchester Road (A628), just beyond Millhouse Green, to the west of the Pennine market town of Penistone. The private property is down a lane, off the main road, surrounded by open fields.

The Old Farmhouse:
“The Old Farmhouse” provides cottage-style self contained accommodation. The entrance is from the terrace on the east side of the house, into the living room, with original oak beams, shutters and an open fireplace with coal effect gas fire. Views from the windows are of the walled garden and the fields beyond. On summer evenings the door to the terrace can be left open, but in the winter, after dark, great pleasure can be had from shutting the door and shutters and experiencing the protection from the elements for which these old Pennine farmhouses are renowned.

A dining table and six chairs, a sideboard and chest of drawers, together with a two-seater sofa, three easy chairs and a wooden backed settee, all fit easily into the large family room. A heated Hostess trolley adds to the facilities in the kitchen. In addition to the colour television there are games and books to entertain those who just wish to relax.

A fitted kitchen makes self-catering easy. The part-panelled room also has a shuttered window and overlooks the walled garden; visitors enjoy taking breakfast using the window-seat, folding table and chairs.

Upstairs there are two double bedrooms. The larger room has an en-suite bathroom with shower over the bath, washbasin & w.c. & electric shaver point. This room has twin beds which can be zipped and linked to make a super king-size bed, if desired. There is also ample room for one or two cots or folding beds. The other bedroom has a king-size bed and has access to a separate shower room with washbasin & w.c. & electric shaver point.

The Other Side:
Converted from a barn into a luxurious self-catering unit, “The Other Side” provides accommodation for one or two people in a studio-style apartment on two floors.

The entrance is from the courtyard where there is parking space, into the well appointed kitchen. Beyond the kitchen is a hall area, with a shower room leading off it, and an open staircase that leads to the large studio on the first floor (21 ft. x 14 ft.). Covered hanging space for clothes is provided in the hall.

There is a well equipped, fitted kitchen with a folding table and chairs for use inside or outdoors.

The shower room contains a sauna, washbasin, w.c., power shower and shaver point. The sauna is available using a slot meter using old 50 pence pieces (available from the house). Towelling robes are provided.

The studio has shuttered windows which open to magnificent views of Pennine Yorkshire, and contains twin divan beds, two easy chairs, a dining table and four chairs with plenty of cupboard and drawer space. In addition to the colour television there are books and games to help visitors spend their time relaxing.

The Guest Suite:
“The Guest Suite” was developed to give more flexibility to the accommodation available at Moor Royd House. It can be booked in conjunction with either of the other units, to provide additional sleeping space, or when some of the party are staying for a shorter period.

Alternatively, it can be hired independently for a maximum of two people as the catering facilities are limited.

Self-contained, “The Guest Suite” has the advantage of views both over the paddock, as in “The Other Side” and into the walled garden, as in “The Old Farmhouse”. It is in similar style to “The Other Side” with its own access, but can be booked with it to make a unit for four with the advantage of two shower rooms.

The entrance is off the terrace, through a small lobby which has been made into a kitchenette.

The bedroom has a “Visitor Bed” which can be made up either as a single or twin beds. There is colour TV and radio, dressing table and storage space, chairs and bedside tables with lamps. Hanging space for clothes is provided in the lobby between bedroom and bathroom.

The shower room is well equipped with a washbasin, shower tub and shower over, vanity unit, electric shaver point and W.C.

Most places in Yorkshire are within travelling distance for a day’s outing. The cities of Manchester, Leeds and York are easily reached for any city-based activities not met by the places listed above.

The north boundary of the Peak District National Park is only one mile away. It is becoming increasingly popular but is still delightfully uncrowded compared with the better known areas.

Millhouse Green has two shops (one a Post Office/general store), between them catering for all basic foodstuffs. Penistone, the well-known market town, has more shops, including two supermarkets and a petrol station, and is about ten minutes drive along the back road.
